Goa, India – A tragic incident occurred on Saturday at the Shree Lairai Zatra festival in Shirgao village, leading to the deaths of six people and injuring over 60 others. The local health officials have confirmed the fatalities and reported that several injured individuals are in critical condition.
The stampede happened during the popular festival, which attracts many visitors and locals. Among the deceased are Surya Mayekar from Sakhali, Pratibha Kalangutkar from Kumbharjua, Yeshwant Kerkar from Thivim, Sagar Nandarge of Mathwada, Piligao, and two siblings, Aditya and Tanuja Kauthankar, both residents of Auchit Wada, Thivim. The victims included two men and two women, who were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane reported that of the injured, eight people are in critical condition, with two requiring intubation. They were referred to Goa Medical College (GMC) for specialized treatment. Immediate medical assistance was deployed, and health officers were stationed at various hospitals, including the Primary Health Centre in Bicholim and the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa, to ensure timely care for those injured.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rushed to the hospitals to check on the injured. He confirmed that the state government responded quickly, dispatching ambulances to the site of the stampede and placing additional medical officers on alert.
The exact cause of the stampede is still under investigation. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation to determine what led to the tragic event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Chief Minister Sawant to discuss the incident, expressing condolences and offering support for the affected families.
This incident raises serious concerns about crowd management and safety at large public events. As investigations continue, many are calling for better planning and emergency responses to prevent such tragedies in the future.
