Kaliningrad, May 6, 2025 – India is set to receive a new addition to its naval fleet, the INS Tamal, a multi-role stealth frigate built in Russia. This advanced warship is expected to be handed over to the Indian Navy after completing necessary tests, including weapon firing, in about a month.
The INS Tamal is a 3,900-tonne frigate and will serve as a strong counterpart to its sister ship, the INS Tushil, which was commissioned in December last year. This move comes as India strengthens its naval presence in the Arabian Sea in response to rising tensions with Pakistan.
India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, highlighted the importance of this new vessel, stating that it will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities. In a recent exercise, the Navy, along with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), successfully tested underwater mines designed to target enemy submarines and stealth warships.
According to officials, the INS Tamal will be fitted with advanced weaponry, including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles with an extended range of 450 kilometers, and Shtil surface-to-air missiles that are also capable of long-range engagements. The frigate can reach speeds of over 30 knots and can carry helicopters such as the Kamov-28 and Kamov-31, which are crucial for anti-submarine operations.
The INS Tamal is part of a larger contract signed with Russia in 2016, under which India will receive four improved Krivak-III class frigates. The first two were purchased for approximately ₹8,000 crore, while the other two, named Triput and Tavasya, are being constructed in India at the Goa Shipyard with technology transfer for a total cost of around ₹13,000 crore.
The new frigates will enhance India’s naval capabilities across all domains: air, surface, subsurface, and electromagnetic warfare. They are designed to be highly automated and include stealth features that improve their combat effectiveness and survivability.
Once the INS Tamal is commissioned, it will set sail for India, marking a significant step in enhancing the naval strength of the country.
