Bengaluru, April 25, 2025: K Kasturirangan, the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), passed away today at the age of 84. He died at his home in Bengaluru, where he had been struggling with age-related health issues for several months.
Kasturirangan was well-known for his significant contributions to India’s space program and for being the chief architect of the National Education Policy (NEP), which aimed to reform and improve education in India. His family confirmed that he is survived by his two sons.
The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the scientific community and beyond. His body will be displayed at the Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru on April 27 for those who wish to pay their last respects.
Born on October 24, 1940, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Kasturirangan made remarkable strides in the field of space research. He served as the ISRO chairperson for nine years before retiring in August 2003. Under his leadership, ISRO achieved several milestones, including satellite launches and missions that put India on the global space map.
Apart from his role at ISRO, Kasturirangan had held several prestigious positions, including Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009 and contributed to the Planning Commission of India.
In recognition of his outstanding work, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2000, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
Kasturirangan’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the significant advancements he helped bring to India’s educational and scientific landscapes. The country mourns the loss of a visionary leader whose impact will be felt for years to come.
