Indian pop icon Usha Uthup’s husband, Jani Chacko Uthup, passed away in Kolkata on Monday, according to their family. Jani, 78, experienced discomfort while watching TV at their home and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The family stated that a massive cardiac arrest was the cause of his death. Jani, Usha’s second husband, had a background in the tea plantation sector. The couple first met at the iconic Trincas in the early 1970s.
Jani is survived by Usha, their son, and their daughter. The family announced that his last rites would be held on Tuesday.
Earlier this year, Usha Uthup was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for her contributions to the music industry. Known as the queen of pop, Usha spoke exclusively to News18 about the recognition, saying, “It’s been an unbelievable moment. The feeling hasn’t sunk in yet. I am thankful to the Government of India for recognizing my talent.”
Following the ceremony, Usha expressed that she deeply missed her frequent collaborator, the late Bappi Lahiri, during the occasion. The iconic duo had produced chartbusters like “Ramba Ho,” “Hari Om Hari,” and “Koi Yahan Nache Nache.” “I missed him so much. I missed both him and RD Burman.”
