The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold closed consultations today to discuss the growing tensions between India and Pakistan. This meeting was requested by Pakistan, which is currently a non-permanent member of the Council. The discussions will take place in the afternoon at the UN headquarters in New York.
The decision for this meeting comes after a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, on April 22, where 26 civilians lost their lives. This attack has heightened concerns about security in the region, especially between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris from Greece, who is presiding over the Council this month, mentioned last week that if there is a request to meet regarding India and Pakistan, it should be honored. He hopes that the discussions will help ease tensions.
The meeting will include all 15 members of the Security Council, five of which are permanent members with veto power: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The other non-permanent members include Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that the country has the right to call for such a meeting whenever it feels necessary. He emphasized that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is a significant concern and that the Security Council must address it.
In response to the recent violence, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has been in contact with various Council members to highlight India’s position on cross-border terrorism, emphasizing the need to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice.
The upcoming meeting represents a critical opportunity for both nations to express their views and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The international community is watching closely as both India and Pakistan navigate this sensitive situation.
