On May 3, 2025, actor Vijay Deverakonda addressed his recent comments made at the pre-release event of the film “Retro.” He expressed his regret after some people found his words concerning, particularly regarding their impact on Scheduled Tribes in India.
In a statement released on social media, Deverakonda explained that he never intended to offend or target any community. He stated, “I want to clarify: there was absolutely no intention to hurt or target any community, especially our Scheduled Tribes, whom I deeply respect.”
He emphasized that his remarks were meant to promote unity, saying, “In what world would I, while urging us to stand united as a country, deliberately discriminate against any group of Indians? I see all of them as my family.”
Deverakonda noted that when he used the word “tribe,” he referred to its historical meaning, which describes ancient societies organized into groups. He clarified that he was not referring to the modern classification of Scheduled Tribes established during colonial times.
He added, “My only aim was to speak of peace, progress, and togetherness. If any part of my message was misunderstood or hurtful, I sincerely regret it.” Deverakonda concluded by affirming his commitment to using his platform to encourage unity, not division.
His comments come as a police case has been filed against him by those who were offended by his remarks during the event.
