Mangaluru, Karnataka – May 2, 2025: A former member of the Bajrang Dal, Suhas Shetty, was brutally murdered in Mangaluru on Thursday night. This shocking attack is raising tensions in the city, leading to increased police presence and a citywide strike called by local Hindu groups.
The incident occurred around 8:27 PM when Shetty was traveling in a car with five others. As their vehicle approached a village on the outskirts of Mangaluru, it was suddenly surrounded by two other cars. Reports say that five to six attackers emerged from these vehicles, armed with swords and other weapons. They fatally injured Shetty before fleeing the scene. He was rushed to AJ Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Shetty had a long criminal history and was previously accused in the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Mohammad Fazil, a case that garnered significant attention and was linked to communal tension in the area.
Following the murder, several Hindu activists and BJP leaders gathered outside the hospital, demanding justice. Among them was local MLA Bharath Shetty, who expressed concerns for the safety of Hindus in the state. “It’s no longer safe for Hindus here,” he stated, urging police to take swift action against those involved.
In response to the unrest, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a prominent Hindu organization, has called for a bandh (strike) in Mangaluru on Friday, which will last from 6 AM to 6 PM. Additional police forces have been deployed, and Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been enforced, which prohibits gatherings in the area to maintain order.
Karnataka’s Home Minister, G Parameshwara, has stated that the government is treating this incident with utmost seriousness. “Four teams have been formed for the investigation. A senior officer has been sent to ensure peace is maintained, and more forces are on standby,” he confirmed.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal mentioned that it is still too early to determine the motive behind the attack. “We have identified a few suspects from visual evidence, and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commented on the situation, urging caution and assuring that anyone involved in the crime will be arrested. He also criticized political rivalries, suggesting that some groups were using this tragedy for their own gain.
The recent violence in Mangaluru is reminiscent of past incidents, and local leaders are calling for peace and unity to prevent further communal strife. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao added that all parties must avoid politicizing these tragic events for their benefit.
The community is now on edge as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Shetty’s murder.
